    Why are you fretting the 6th string at the 1st fret? Don't you want to read the string height at the 12 fret with the 6th string resting in its nut slot? Won't this give you a reading .010-.020 lower than actual (the height of the 6th string off the 1st fret?

    i do this without any silly gimmick tools. the string is a straightedge. the first fret and the 17th are good places to press it down and you can see the relief of the neck as the gap between the frets and the string. the thickness of the high e string is about the same measure as the height that same string should be above the 8th fret when its pressed down at the 1st and 17th. you dont even need a capo, hold the 1st fret with one hand and use the pinky and thumb for the others

I got into working on guitars about a year ago because I didnt have a luthier near me and was tired of being out of tune. Now about a year later I have all sorts of luthier tools and Im cutting my own nuts for my Les Paul and Strat Ultra! Ive become addicted to it! • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare 14 годин тому

      This is a fixed radius bridge (Tune-o-Matic style). You cannot adjust the individual saddles up or down, they are fixed. You can only adjust string action using the outside posts to raise and lower the treble side and bass side of the bridge after the radius has been set on this guitar.

    Do you still use the E string on a 5 string bass? Or do you use the B string?

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare 8 днів тому

      For a 5 string bass you measure using the B string. The pick capo would go over the B, under the E, and over the A. It may be harder to push larger B strings down, if the pick capo doesn't hold them down you can also use a finger in this application.

    6:54 actual 6th fret or 6th in relation to the "capo"? Can't even see and his "12th" is actually 13 (without capo) Edit Ok so it's actual 6th 7:43 And I guess technically it is 12th fret since you're looking at fretting it in "reverse" from 13. Lol

    Very informative video. Thank you. Just one question, what is the purpose of the pick at the first fret? And how do you place it so it stays in position?

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare 11 днів тому

      You use the pick capo to hold the E strings down at the first fret because the first fret is a fixed reference point for making the truss rod adjustment and string height adjustment. The measurements labeled on the gauges are based off the fixed-point reference of the first fret. Holding down the string at the first fret with the Pick Capo allows you to make an accurate adjustment following the KISS methods linear flow.

    This is a great video. I'm anxious to set up my Stratocaster, but I just put new strings on and I don't know the fretboard radius. The guide on the website says "most modern models (post-1980s)", so I can't be sure since I got my guitar in 2006. How about a version of your radius gauge that has notches for strings so I don't have to unstring my guitar.

    Is there a way to prevent accidentally going too deep and filing the depth of the nut slot? Being a novice, I would love to know if there is a trick to make this process foolproof so I don't lower the string height at the 1st fret. Thanks.

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare 21 день тому

      The KISS setup method is designed to perform all the steps in order. You would have done the neck relief, radius and string action prior to doing the nut slots. The nut slots are the last part of playability. Using our nut height gauge and proper sizes for your guitar, we have these printed on the gauge, you measure your nut height. When lowering the nut slots that need to be lowered, go slow and steady. Take a little bit off at time, put the string back in the nut slot, tuner to pitch and measure again. It may take a few times, but it is the safest way we've found to lower the nut slots.

    I don't have a Taylor but just finished lowering the action on a pawn shop purchased Yamaha APX500. I got it for a steal as it needed a lot of work but now it plays like a dream! It was real cruddy!! frets polished up, cleaned and set up with new strings and action lowered. Has a nice pickup system and sounds great now. Thanks!!! It took me several times removing bridge and sanding because I didn't want to over do it. Patience is key.

    What Taylor model is that? Love the cutwaway.

    Correction on my prior post. By leaving the "pick capo" in while setting the action on the low E only, you'd be setting the action at the 12th fret to an actual height of .070, not .060. Once you remove the "pick capo" the string returns to its real height which would be higher than what you measured on the gauge before it was released.

    A 25.14 you have your "pick capo" holding down the low E string at the 1st fret, but nothing holding down the high E string. Could you please explain the reasoning behind this "offset" approach? 🤔 If your action at the 1st fret is .020 at the nut saddle on the low E, wouldn't you be dropping the action at the 12th fret by an extra .010 on the low E? So you would be reading .060 on your gauge, but in reality you'd be at .050? 🧐

    What a dick.... file the saddles down and end up with a sharp edge to break your strings on.... well done! A Fritz ruler gives you the height for reference. To save any drama with p/ups.... they need to be the exact same volume....you flick from each position and they need to be the same volume, if not lower or raise accordingly.. You just make all of this stupidly complicated.

    What order to you recommend to do this on a TOM bridge? Set relief, then bridge radius, then action and lastly fix the nut? Should you have a straight neck when doings these measurments or at prefered relief and action?

      For a fixed bridge setup, we recommend the following: Truss Rod, Radius of Strings, Action of Strings, Nut Height, Intonation, Pickup Height. You can check it out here to learn more about the step order we recommend: www.musicnomadcare.com/How-To-Advice/Setup-Hub/The-Setup-Flow/ You do not need to flatten the neck when doing these measurements.

    How does this translate to 5-strings?

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare Місяць тому

      You would follow the same setup process as the 4-string P-Bass, but on a 5-string, you would start with the gauge labeled bass .008. That is the most common measurement for bass guitars. If you get some buzzing, go to the gauge labeled classical .010 to create a larger pocket for the low B string and other strings to oscillate. For string action, the most common String Action Height for a Low-Medium action on the bass side (or low string) that will make your bass play great would be 0.90" or 2.24mm on the 5th or 6th string. Does the feeler gauge tool apply to extended range guitars? What about multiscale (fanned fret) guitars?

    I would be happier if a set of those nut files cost $40 rather than $80. Too much.

    I used this gauge on strat-style bridge and I like to share a few tips. 1) Lower all the strings and set the high and low E strings to desired heights. 2) Use a flash light behind the radius gauge to observe the gap between the inner strings and the gauge. 3) Detune the strings to avoid stripping the saddle screws and raise each string. Tune and check then repeat. then move to the other strings.

    You set up for tone first then playability. There was no mention of tone in this video.

    Would this polish be safe on an Eastman e40oo ? Thanks

      Hi, The Guitar ONE would be safe on the gloss finish of the Eastman E40OO. You could also use the Guitar Detailer which is safe on both gloss and matte finishes. Thank you!

    Do you find that the pickups are too boomy with having the low and high e at the same pickup height?
